Any home can have a mold problem, whether it is new or older. If a home has warm, damp, and dark conditions, mold is likely to grow. In addition to damaging building materials, mold can cause respiratory problems, eye irritation, and headaches. It is important for your health and the structure of your home to keep mold from growing and spreading. Here are 3 tips for preventing mold at home.

1. Preventing Mold at Home with Ventilation

Mold reproduces through spores that float in the air and settle on surfaces. Ventilation keeps the spores from landing in a place that they can thrive and spread. A well-ventilated home also stays drier. Use ventilation fans in kitchens and bathrooms to remove the damp, warm air that results from showering and cooking.

2. Keep the House Dry

There are many possible sources of moisture in the home. Here are some to look out for:

  • Leaking faucets and pipes
  • Leaks inside cabinets under sinks
  • Leaking connections on the washing machine, dishwasher, and water heater
  • Around houseplants
  • Under rugs, especially by the front door and bathroom
  • In the attic or basement

Check all of these places regularly. Remove any standing water, dry the area thoroughly, and make repairs to fix the problem. If you can’t figure out where the water is coming from, contact a professional plumber or inspector.

3. Preventing Mold at Home By Cleaning

Some rooms in the home are more likely to develop a mold issue because they are the places where water is most used.

At least once a week, clean and dry the shower and bathtub, the sink, and around the toilet. Use a bleach-based or anti-microbial cleaner to eliminate any existing mold and prevent more from forming. Put wet towels in the dryer and hang up anti-slip shower mats and bath rugs so that mold doesn’t grow from the moisture trapped under them.

In the kitchen, don’t leave food particles sitting in the sink because they can rot and grow mold. Take the trash out frequently.

Mold in the home should never be taken lightly. Use the above tips to keep your home mold-free.
